Out and about

Wednesday is photoSoc day (it’s also wireless test day, but let’s not go there, okay?) and today was different to the usual weekly stand-up talk. About 25 people turned up for the “walkabout” at Platt Fields Park, near Owen’s Park.

The walkabout itself was reasonable enough. It’s was horribly cold though, and there’s not actually that much interesting stuff to take photos of. Nevertheless, we quickly organised ourselves into groups, amusingly I ended up with two other D70 users, Vlad (with his super-size pentaprism :) and Jon, the kit master, who had brought along a shopping trolley and something like 20 Holga 120Ns to sell.

Afterwards we headed to a pub… I’m not quite sure where the pub was, but it may very well have been one of those magical buildings that exist only on the Discworld… y’know, the ones that are there one day, and gone the next. The best bit about the pub had to be the thanks we received on the way out. I’ve never seen it before, but the landlady was quite literally falling over herself to thank us for coming. Something tells me they don’t get folk like us coming to visit; an hypothesis backed up by the fact that she said “People come here in ones, not groups of five” and “Have you got the wrong pub?”. Weird, but quite a nice place all the same.

The highlight shot of the day (well, the only decent shot, really) was one of Oxford Road as viewed from the Maths Tower exit of Kilburn Building. Thanks to the demolition work the pavement and rooftops were coated in dust… as we were walking out I was confused for a second and had to do a double-take. I’ve only played with this a little in the GIMP but the few people that have seen this seem to think it’s pretty good, so I’ll stick with it for now:

All in all… a very nice day, marred only by the fifteen minutes we agreed not to talk about.
