If you go for the full on "racing" style then you are hunched down but if you don't then drops just offer you more hand positions and when down on the drops a drastic aerodynamic advantage.

Since you have confessed to tightening your toe straps clearly power and therefore speed are important to you so a road bike is the way to go. If you don't try it you will always have the voice behind you saying you should, even when I'm not in the office;-)

You could be right, but the last time I cycled on a bike with drop handlebars I didn't find it to be terribly comfortable... you end up hunched down all the time
That's the good thing about the bar ends... they add height :)
