Firefox extensions

These days I use Firefox over Opera or Epiphany for the extensions.  I’ll keep this page up-to-date with which extensions I use, as much for my own benefit, as anybody else’s.  Hopefully somebody else will find it useful.

  • del.icio.us Bookmarks – proper tagged bookmarks, stored centrally on the del.icio.us servers.  Handy for people too lazy to properly organise bookmarks, as well as when using multiple computers and different Firefox profiles

  • Download Statusbar – making downloads work the same way as tabs: without a whole new window

  • Adblock Plus – regular Adblock didn’t work with the Firefox 3 betas; gets rid of annoying flash and image ads

  • Greasemonkey – in combination with userscripts.org rewrite websites to work the way you want them to; I add extra links to my blog to save me navigating to the Admin interface to post a new entry or moderate comments

  • StumbleUpon – random websites, photos, stupid videos: a total timewaster

  • translator – instantly translate whole pages or selected text between languages; can use multiple translation backends (Google Translate by default)

  • DownThemAll! – scrape images, videos or other content from websites; really handy when you come across good web galleries but hate clicking through slow web interfaces

  • FoxyProxy – quickly switch web proxies, or, use different web proxies based on URL pattern matching

  • Gmail Notifier – quick and easy notification of new email

  • Modify Headers – see my Hacking T-Mobile Web Proxy entry

  • User Agent Switcher – I rarely need this these days, but from time to time it is handy to masquerade as IE or another browser
